How to sell like a senior Key Account Manager
A senior Key Account isn't someone who manages a portfolio. It's someone who understands the customer's business well enough to see opportunities the customer hasn't spotted yet. The shift is from reactive to consultative and proactive.
1. Build business acumen
Knowing your product is the minimum. A senior professional also knows:
- the customer's market and main competitors;
- their revenue model;
- their operational challenges;
- their growth goals;
- the trends that could affect their business.
2. Master consultative selling
Consultative selling starts with questions, not a presentation. Use these as a starting point:
About the business
- What are the company's priorities right now?
- What are the sales goals for the coming months?
- What challenges are holding growth back?
About processes
- How does prospecting work today?
- Which tools does the team use?
- How much time does the team spend on manual work?
- How do you track sales productivity?
About results
- Which metrics define success?
- Where are the biggest conversion bottlenecks?
- What would need to change to get better results?
3. Map the stakeholders
In strategic deals there's almost never a single decision maker.
| Role | Who they are | What usually matters to them |
|---|---|---|
| Decision maker | Makes the final call | Impact on business goals and decision risk |
| Influencer | Shapes the choice | Whether the solution solves the problem they raised |
| End user | Uses it every day | Ease of use, time saved, learning curve |
| Economic buyer | Approves the budget | Cost, return and predictability |
Knowing what each one cares about lets you adapt the conversation and build a proposal that works for everyone.
4. Work on revenue expansion
- Upsell: moving to a more complete plan, when it fits the customer's needs.
- Cross-sell: complementary products or features that add value.
- Account expansion: new departments, teams or business units that can use the solution.
- Renewal: worked early, showing results and the value delivered.
5. The four-step method
- Understand: the business, goals and challenges.
- Connect: needs to the opportunities your solution offers.
- Demonstrate: value with examples, data and demos in the customer's context.
- Expand: the relationship and the growth opportunities.
